BYD Seal X: Chinese MIIT Unveils Latest Electric Sedan

What?

On May 11, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) revealed the BYD Seal X, a new addition to the Ocean series of pure electric sedans. The name “Seal X” may just be a placeholder, as the declaration also featured other nameplates like “Seal 06GT”, “Seal MINI”, and “Seal 05EV”. The BYD Seal family already includes models like Seal 06, Seal EV, Seal DM-i, and Seal U (known internationally as the BYD Song Plus). In April alone, the Seal family saw 14,269 vehicle sales, representing 10.26% of the monthly Ocean series sales which totaled 139,046 vehicles.

Why does it matter?

The BYD Seal X boasts dimensions of 4630/1880/1490 mm, a wheelbase of 2820 mm, and a top speed of 200 km/h. It offers variations in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive options, with a single-motor model outputting 160 kW and a dual-motor model producing 310 kW. Running on BYD’s Blade batteries, the powertrain details are still under wraps. The sedan features distinctive design elements such as slender crescent-shaped headlights, fang-like lower sections, and lidar technology. Wheels come in petal-shaped or crab-claw rims in 18-inch and 19-inch sizes.

How is it going to shape the future?

With the BYD Seal X joining the market, alongside previously announced 2024 BYD Seal EV models like the BYD7006BEVA6, BYD7006BEVA10, and BYD7006BEVA8, the electric vehicle landscape continues to expand. As more details emerge about the BYD Seal X’s performance and specifications, it will be interesting to see how it competes in the growing electric sedan segment. Keep an eye out for updates on this latest addition to BYD’s electric vehicle lineup.
