BYD, CATL Introduce 6C Fast Charging Batteries Soon

BYD and CATL are set to revolutionize the electric vehicle industry with the launch of batteries capable of 6C fast charging. BYD is introducing the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade battery 2.0 in the second half of the year, supporting the impressive 6C charge rate. On the other hand, CATL is gearing up to release the Qilin Battery 2.0 by the end of the year, also equipped with LFP chemistry and 6C fast charging capabilities.

Why does it matter?

The race for faster-charging technology is crucial for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. CATL recently made headlines with its Shenxing battery, enabling 5C charging and providing a 472 km range with just an 11.5-minute charge for the Zeekr 001. Shenxing Plus, with 205 Wh/kg energy density, was later introduced to power EVs with a range of 1000 km, charging at 4C. Li Auto also joined the fast-charging game with the Li Mega, featuring a Qilin Battery with 5C charging, boasting a 500 km range in just 12 minutes.

The leap to 6C charging represents a significant advancement in EV technology, promising even quicker charging times and greater convenience for EV owners. However, the availability of supporting charging infrastructure remains a critical factor in realizing the full potential of these high-speed charging batteries. Companies like Huawei and Li Auto are already making strides in this direction, with plans for ultrafast EV chargers and supercharging stations capable of supporting 5C charging by 2025.

How is it going to shape the future?

The introduction of batteries with 6C fast charging capabilities by BYD and CATL signals a promising future for electric vehicles. With the potential to charge an entire battery in just 10 minutes at a 6C rate, the convenience of owning an EV is set to improve significantly. However, the success of this technology hinges on the development of a robust charging infrastructure capable of supporting these rapid charging speeds. As companies continue to innovate and invest in charging solutions, the dream of widespread EV adoption powered by lightning-fast charging capabilities may soon become a reality.
